    As a general rule...
As a general rule when spot metering and shooting film I always exposed for the shadows with negitive film and for the highlights when shooting slide or positive film. Is there a general rule with digital as far as exposes go?

As far as I know you wat to expose digital like slide, preserve the highlights.

I tend to expose so that the histogram shows weight favouring the right side (the lighter tones). Then I reduce exposure in Photoshop. This way, I don't miss any detail in the shot.
