D70: Rattling sound

I recently bought a D70, and I get a rattling sound which emanates from the camera body. It sounds like as if a screw has come loose; my vendor has told me that I have to bring the camera back within a week if anything goes wrong. I'm just wondering if this might be just a mechanism inside the camera, would appreciate it if someone experienced with SLRs could enlighten me, as the D70 is my first SLR.

It's most likely just the orientation sensor, which tells the camera whether you're holding it horizontally or vertically. In my Canon 10D it produces a rattling sound when moving the camera, and from what I've read the D70 does the same. They may mention it in the manual.

I have had a D100 for a year and a half and a D70 for about 9 months, and I have never heard sounds like you have mentioned emanating from the cameras. I would take it in and have it checked out--it can't hurt.

I have Canon 10D and I have no rattles at all with my camera. I would think that there really shouldn't be any rattles going on in any cameras and would indicate that something is amiss and should be investigate before anything further happens to the camera. I haven't had any rattles with any cameras I have owned in 40 years.

It's a faint rattle and only occurs with the digital models that have the orientation sensor (the D100 does not have it) - a quick call to Nikon should be able to confirm this. If you search "D70" + "rattling" + "orientation" on google you'll find you're not alone. You can also check this thread at Nikonians.

As far as the 10D, Canon actually mentions that you might hear it right in the manual.

Thanks guys. I read the post on nikonians, and it seems a lot of D70 owners have been getting a similar sound. I'm taking it back in any case to see what the people at the store have to say about this.
