    Nikon 70mm-300mm 4-5.6 G lens

I have a D70 and wonder how does the above lens perform with it. It retails for only $129-95 at Adorama.

Any info and advice would be much appreciated.

I have used that lens before, and wasn't all that impressed by it. And it would be a shame to have a nice camera such as the D70 and use some inferior glass on it. Have you searched the reviews on this site? Generally they are pretty good, just keep in mind there are mixed reactions for everything. I have heard that the Nikkor 70-300 ED (not G) lens was quite good however (never used it though). Personally, I have a Sigma 300mm f/4.0 that I got on ebay for like $250, and I love it. If you can live with not having a zoom, the image quality of any fixed focal length lens will be much higher and get more out of your D70. Good luck with the decision.

Thanks for your reply Bob. I was only interested in the lens because it is a G lens and is therefore fully compatible with the D70 to enjoy the camera's full functions.

To cheap to be really good. I owned an old 70-300 and it was very soft. with the 1.5 multiplier it may be not that extreme in the corners.

I think you only need AF lenses for metering capability, at least that's true of the others. Some recent AF lenses are G lenses which means they don't have an aperture ring so they can only be controlled from the body. You should be fine with any Nikon AF or AF-D lens, whether or not it's also a G lens.
