Sigma lenses and their compatibility with digital SLR

I bought a Sigma 28-300mm F.3.5-6.3 DL hyperzoom, one of the last Aspherical IFs, for my Canon non-digital EOS SLR about 4 years ago. I would like to now buy a digital SLR, but would first like to know whether this lens is compatible with digital Canon EOS SLRs. I would welcome any clarifications/recommendations on which camera, if any, would be compatible with this lens.

Welcome to the forum! Your sigma lens should fit on any of the Canon EOS DSLR's, but depending on what you get, you may not get the same field of view from your lens, as you do on your film SLR. Canon only has 2 full frame DSLR's, the 1Ds, and the 5D. Both of these would give you the same field of view as your film camera. The other 1D cameras will give you a 1.3x crop factor, and the digital Rebels, and the 30D will give you a 1.6x crop factor.

There have been some issues with Sigma lenses not working properly on DSLR's but it was a simple chip fix, and from what I remember reading, Sigma was fixing them at no cost. I don't know if they would do that for an older lens, but you never know. You should take your lens to a camera shop, and try it out on the DSLR bodies to give you a better idea.

I know Sigma has an older 500mm f/4.5 that won't meter properly on a DSLR, but I don't know of any other Sigma lenses with that issue.

I'm using a sigma 28 - 80mm macro lens on my EOS 300D. I also got one for my daughter to use with her EOS 600 35mm camera. Neither of us has had any problem with this lens. In fact it is my favorite lens. The advice to take the lens to a camera store and try it on a camera is good, that way you know it will work ( or not) before buying the camera.
