    Canon L Lens(WORTH IT?)
I also posted this in viewfinder.

Ok all you pro's. I need some help, I just received my 28-300L and its not as impressive as I expected. In fact I think the clarity and consistency is equal or better with the 100-300 USM. I am trying to justify keeping this thing but now I am very confused. I have taken several test shots and the photos are equal on screen. Where should I be seeing the major differences? Also when I turn on the IS and try to AF it makes a hollow clank inside, normal or not? I don’t hear it on my 28-135 IS as loud.

I will say it focuses faster and I like the fact I can be about a foot away and use the total range of the zoom. But is it really that much better?

Thanks in advance for saving me money or making me feel comfortable with my purchase.

The monitor is a low resolution device. Worse yet, if it isn't color calibrated its even worse. There is no way you will see the difference between a consumer lens and an "L" lens on the screen without blowing it up and looking at specific parts.

The L lens will give you better contrast, a bit more detail, and less distortion. Will you see a difference? Maybe, but for most amateurs it may not be worth the extra money. I went from a 100-400 L IS to a very average 75-300 IS because the extra weight and cost for the L were just not worth it to me. For others, it will be the opposite. Only you can decide that.

That clanking sound is the sound of an IS unit that's faulty. Been there. Send it in. I'd bet your pictures get better too after they fix your lens.
