My question is.Why did Canon put a 1.3x(APS-H) sensor in the 1D?

As compared to what? A full frame sensor or the 1.6x sensor?

Just a guess, but a smaller sensor is much cheaper to make so they went with the 1.3x instead of the FF. This will keep the cost down, as well as the retail price making the camera more affordable.

WIth a larger sensor, they can make the pixels larger, and that will give you a cleaner (less noise) image, giving the 1D better image quality over cameras with the 1.6x sensor.

That is actually an interesting question. The 1D image quality has always been better than the 1/6x cameras because of the larger pixels. But why they chose that size in the first place is a mystery to me. Maybe I should ask them :D
