    Cannon 20D
Ok, so I decided to splurge and go with the Canon 20D instead of the Rebel XT. Now I need to know what to purchase along with it. Lenses? I was thinking of the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Anything else? Since I went big on the body I cant afford the Canon lens. I am mainly shooting baseball, football, and basketball. Any help is appreciated.

It might actually be better to go with the less expensive body and a better lens. The lens is usually the most important piece of equipment. However, in this case that might not be true. The Rebel only allows you to use AI Servo autofocus in the sports mode. You can use it all the time, in whatever exposure mode you want, with the 20D. Still, the Canon 70-200L lens is a beauty. I think you should go to a camera store and try the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM, the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L, and the Canon 70-200 f/4L on the 20D and the Rebel XT. After you do that, you'll know what the right thing to do is.

You see, I havent purchased the 20D yet so if you think there's a camera that is cheaper that wont sacrifice much, give me some ideas! I mean, is it wise to go with say a Rebel XT or a D70s instead of the 20D and spend more on the lense? I am a h.s student too, 15 years old so I dont have much money. But what other bodies would work well?

I'd go with the D70 and upgrade the firmware, that way the only difference between the D70 and D70s at that point is the D70 has .2 of an inch smaller LCD display. The body captures the image but the image itself goes through the lens, so I would go with a chepper body and better lens. I plan on getting the D70 in about a month or so and saving up for some nice lenses.

John is slightly off on this one, the Rebel XT lets you use whatever focus mode you want whenever, so you could definitely go with the XT and the Canon 70-200. I agree, the lens is what you should be pouring money into, that is what makes the pictures look the way they do, not the camera.

    Thanks everyone. I'm thinking...
Canon Digital Rebel XT Body - $~820
    Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L USM - $~550
    Canon EF 50MM F/1.8 - $~80

    Approx. Total (w/o accessories) = ~$1450

First DSLR so what do you think? My budget is just about 1700 dollars so I'd need the rest for accessories.

That would be a very, very good beginning and keep you going for quite a while.
