Best All Around Lens for the XT
hey everyone, im a beginner photographer and i dont know much about lenses. i hear that the stock lens is pretty good but i think the zoom is a little limited to what i want. i want to purchase a good all around lens (good for indoors, outdoors, longer zoom) for a good price. does the Canon EF 50mm/1.8 have a low zoom? someone educate me

The Canon EF 50mm/1.8 lens is the fixed lens... you can't zoom with this lens... There are many good zoom lens for Canon.. check the reviews on this site.

I just ordered the Caon 20D and EF 17-40mm f/4 ( will get it in the next couple weeks)... was thinking to get the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM... but decided to get the 17-40.

It's depending on your budget. I really think the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is the best all around lens.

    My 2 cents suggestion.

    Another vote for the 17-85.

28-135 IS f/3.5 -5.6 Canon lens is worth a look as well.

I also just got an XT. I think the 28-135 is a great lens, I got it used with a couple filters (PL and UV) and a hood on ebay and it has performed well. It does add bulk but for picture taking I usually use a monopod and the IS and it's been very sharp.

I do a lot of mountain biking with my 10D. My ride kit is the 28-135 IS and the 15mm Fisheye. I love the range of the 28-135mm IS on the 10D. But I need to have wide-angle ability too - hence the Fisheye.

Regardless of the responses you get here, you need to tell us what your main interest is. If you say "everything", the is no best all-around lens. I gave advice to a fellow who had asked the same question, and when I suggested a moderate wide to short telephoto, he complained that it couldn't shoot 1:1 macros. Well, ****. Be more specific.

    My choices:

    Sports: 70-200mm f/2.8L
    Landscape: 24-70mm f/2.8L or the 17-40 f/4.0L
    Wildlife: 300mm f/2.8L IS

For just a walkaround lens? the 24-70 f/2.8L.
Inexpensive? Definitely not. Good glass? Yes.
