20D - help me choose which one...

    Hi everyone,

I'm planning to buy myself a new 'toy' to replace/addition to my Canon A2E...

Which combo should I get? I lean toward combo #1... what you guys/gals think?

    1) Canon 20D + EF 17-40mm f/4L
    2) Canon 20D + EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
    3) Canon 20D + EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (combo)
    3) Canon 20D + 28-135 IS USM ( this lens I currently use )

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Don't buy the 18-55 if you care about quality. On rare occasion someone does end up with a sharp one but generally the quality shows in the price of the lens.

The 28-135 is a good lens but more of a telephoto than an all-around once you put it on a digital. You end up with an effective 45-205 due to the 1.6x magnification.

The 17-40 is a great lens if you don't mind the limited range, although it would be great in conjunction with your 28-135.

I have the 17-85 which is available in a kit with the 20D at a discounted price. I love that lens; it gives me an effective 27-136 and is just as sharp as my 70-200 L.

Hope this helps, welcome to the board!

Re: 20D - help me choose which one...

Thanks for quick reply... I love my 28-135 IS USM... which attached to my A2E all the time. As you said, I will loose the wide angle.. I do have a 200mm L f/4 ( an old one, forgot the exact zoom range, because I hardly use it).

I like the 17-85 zoom range too, but was thinking that the 17-40 is an 'L' series... maybe the quality won't be noticeable?

Actually my budget is not that great.. since 20D has $100 and I have been waiting to get a DSLR since D30... (maybe this is a good time to get a new toy???... )..

I have been using my 'old' Powershot G1 for years... take good pictures.. but hate the shutter lag....

My newborn baby 'boy' will be coming in August... I would love to use this new 'toy' to do some good pix of him.

    Thanks again.

Re: 20D - help me choose which one...

I purchased option #1. Got the camera and the lens last week... shot some shots already... love the lens.. it's a little short in the zoom range as other stated, that's OK.. I want sharp pictures. I guess I get spoiled by my 28-135 IS USM zoom range.
