What did you do to your memory card?

There was a post earlier (in this forum, I think) about CF cards verses SD. In it, I stated how I like the CF cards because they are more durable and less prone to getting lost.

Well, very recently while moving laundry from the washer to the dryer, I found that my only 1 GB Ultra II CF card went through a complete washer cycle. I dried it out (not in the dryer ), plugged it in, and low and behold it still worked perfectly.

Very clean card now, but not the recommended way to do it.

Any other stories of memory card abuse?

I heard that too. There was a Pop Photo article about hat very thing some time ago. They can go through a lot and still work.

I hope you rinsed it with distilled water first and then dried it out otherwise impurities might start to errode some of the innards of the card.

This is a very common occurance with CF cards.

I had a card run over by a race car, but it still works fine.

I once saw a bad Sylvester Stallone movie (aren't his usually bad) in which he was a race car driver. Aren't such things supposed to stay stuck in the tire? Movie folklore at its best I think.

Peter, I hadn't thought about that. I think I'll be pushing my luck if I get it wet again. I will make it my backup now. Time to get a new card.

Many years ago, my Canon S100 with a CF card fell into a polluted river several times (long story). The camera cost $200 to take apart and clean up but the CF card, rinsed under tap water and allowed to dry, has worked perfectly ever since. I love those CF cards!

    .
Not when the tires are cold. I have, on several occasions gotten stuck to race tracks following races due the soft rubber and heat. Following the 3 Hour Figure 8 World Championship at the Indianapolis Speeddrome I got so much rubber stuck to my boots it retreaded them and I didn't get it all off for a month. The wierd one though was getting stuck to a dirt track. There was so much rubber stuck to the track that your feet would stick to it. And then there are the indoor tracks. Normally they put something on the floor to make it a bit sticky, and sometimes it gets too sticky and you stick to it, even worse after a night of racing and cars have been running around for 5 or 6 hours.

JS, that's a lot of hot rubber! I'm picturing a stuck boot on one of those high banking corners

Michael, I'd like to hear your long story about how you dropped your CF card in the river several times.

I'm sold on CF cards - they are small enough. Can't imagine using SD's , XD's, BS's, or that newer one that fits inside the SD cards

Re: What did you do to your memory card?

In the early days of digital we had a digital SD based camera to take pictures of paying customers with hot car models. 15% of the time, after removing the card and walking to the printing station we would lose all the files. We resorted to swamping cameras on the tripod because we couldn't risk losing any more photos. We didn't want to touch that SD at all....too risky.
