Do you mean an electronic, or a look through the body (not the lens) viewfinder? I do not know into which category to place most point-and-shoots, but a lot do have the look through the body viewfinder. I suppose some will tell you that it's a matter of taste... of preference... because most P&S users want to see the whole picture in an LCD frame before shooting (...but not me). However, there are three reasons why I find it important to have a viewfinder (mine is an EVF): 1) sunlight! 2) batteries! 3) shutter lag! (can be reduced by not using the LCD) ...but that's just me...

I agree with the scientist. My Panasonic has both and I have never used the LCD screen. For one thing, LCD's are much tougher to see outdoors and it's much easier to hold a camera steady if it's pressed against your forehead vs. held out in front of you.
