Tripod recommendations

Hello all! I'm in the market for a good tripod. One that's light weight and can hold up to 8lbs. Preferably with quick release legs. I've heard Bogen and Gitzo are good. I'm wondering what others are using and recommend.

I have a low end Sunpak 6601 ($35) and love it.

Some of their higher end models might suit your needs. (I just checked and there are some on amazon that hold up to 11 pounds in the ~$70 USD range)

I'm using a 20+ year old Sears that I bought for $18 bucks at a flea market way back when.
I did have to replace the head recently but I'll put the legs up against anybody's Its very sturdy, has geared center column, adjustable feet, 3 section lever lock legs that work smooth.
I do have my eyes on a gitzo 2220 though. Those old sears ones arent' easy to find.
Adorama and B&H both have a good selection and you can check off your requirements to see just the ones that meet those requirements.

When the last snow storm hit here in Indiana. I wanted to go out and shoot traffic to catch the light beams with slow shutter speed. When I got back and put them on the computer, Definitily got a lot of strange light movments. Ever see streets lights dance in the morning.
Realized, I need a good tripod. There is such an array of tripods and heads that it makes your head spin.
Thought, I had found the combination that I was looking for, Bogen 3021 Pro and the Manfrotto 322RC2 Pistol Grip. But upon reading, realized, I shoot a lot of my daughters sports, and the Pistol Grip may not be ideal for this. So, back in the hunt for a tripod and head.
I feel, even if you have very deep pockets, the tripod and head is a hard choice to find the right combination.

I have that tripod setup and love it. Very versitle and quick and stable. Keep in mind that a tripod is not really a piece of sports equipment no matter what head you have. For sports you really want to look at a monopod. Small, compact, and used properly takes no more space than you are staing in. Many sporting events a tripod would not be allowed and moving one quickly is impossible.

I will have to agree with you and most of the time a monopod will work better.
When I purchased my camera, it came with a kit. I have both a tripdo and a monopod.
When the last snow storm here in Indiana. I went out and took pictures of cars, wanting
to catch the tail lights with a very slow shutter speeds. You ever see street lights dance.
Knew right then that a tripod has to be one of my next items needed.
About the only time, I would use my tripod would be for my daughters baseball games.
To pan the players running to the bases. Any other time, the monopod would be more
Ideal.
Have you ever noticed how rules are "interrupted" when you hand the coach or principal
a picture of their child, cropped and PP!!!
I would like to know more about your set-up if you want to send me an off-line here.

Has anyone used the Benro C-228 carbon fiber tripod legs? They support 17.6 lbs. and
weigh 3.6 lbs. Cost is $199.99, I believe, at B&H...

Gitzos, I hear, are highly touted but rather pricey...

Would also welcome any feedback...
