    Tiffen filter?

Anyone know anything about Tiffen filters? I want a UV filter for my new Nikon D200 18-135mm lens, but after that bill I dont have $$ left for the needed accessories. I want to protect my lens and found an inexpensive Tiffen UV filter. I know you get what you pay for, and glass is important, but I am pretty broke right now and want the protection. Any advice?

    Thanks

If you really want the protection, get the best filter that you can afford. If that is a $20 filter, get it. If you can find one in your budget, get one that's multi-coated. Personally, I don't buy into the filter as protection thing. I know many people swear by them, and they have saved people many times, but I just don't use them myself. But if not having the protection is going to make you feel uncomfortable using your gear, them put a filter on it. You can always replace it when you get some more $.

As far as Tiffen goes, they are a good brand, but like you said, you get what you pay for. Tiffen has some top quality filters and they also have some that are not as great.

You must get a multicoated filter. If you don't, you'll be back here complaining about the quality of your camera! IMHO, skip the filter until you can afford a high quality one. A cheap filter is just that: cheap. Is that what you really want to have in front of your lens all the time? Believe it or not, the "protection" offered by a filter is minimal.
