Shutter priority and the Nikon D60

I was palying with the shutter priority mode today and was noticing that the photos all came out black. It's like the ISO is wrong or something. I played with different settings and all but when I set the shutter speed to around 1/400 or higher, the pictures all come out black. What am I doing wrong?

BTW, I was photographing my dog running if that means anything. Also the lens I was using is the 55-200mm VR.

Then youre a few f-stops out of automated territory. You'll have to up ISO or reduce shutter speed, and/or get a faster lens. at 200mm you're at 5.6, a very slow speed, you'll have better luck in that metering territory with a fast 2.8 zoom or an even faster 1.4-2 prime, or, just crank up the iso.

Set your ISO to AUTO and set the max ISO setting to 800. When you do this it will allow your camera to not only automatically adjust your F stop to work with the shutter speed you have chosen but it will allow the camera to automatically adjust the ISO as needed up to the maximum you have set, Jeff

It seems that I can't choose auto ISO when in P,S,A,M modes. I can only choose auto when in a vari-program mode. How can I set the ISO to auto while still maintaining my high shutter speed. I have looked in my book but it seems vague to me. I'm just noob at this...LOL

You are correct, my mistake. I tried my D80 and it is the same way. You can use the sports mode on the dial it will favor a faster shutter speed for action and also allow you to choose the AUTO ISO. This way the camera will choose a faster shutter speed and ISO automatically, Jeff

I guess the shutter priority mode is for bright daylight I assume.

I've never used shutter priority and I suppose it has its uses but I prefer aperture priority when not shooting manual. If faster shutter speeds are what I'm after I just keep opening up the aperture until I get the fastest shutter speed but I won't get one that's not going to work at all because the camera will know what shutter speed to use in that situation....supposedly anyway. If the shutter speed the camera has chosen is too slow, I know its time to break out the tripod.

Well the easiest thing to do is reset the camera and start over.

That seems like a silly design flaw on Nikon, to not allow for Auto ISO in the manual modes.

This is strange, I'm sure I've set up auto ISO in the D60 and D80. Are you using custom setting 10 on the D60? Auto ISO is set up through that function, not through the ISO speed menu. It's done in more or less the same way on the D80 (custom setting 7). that's the way they used to organize it, separating it from the auto-program modes (where ISO auto would follow rules the camera sets) and the manual/priority modes (where you set your own minimum shutter speed and ISO maximum).
