Self portrait action shots
Is there a universal wireless remote that I can use for self portrait action shots? A small remote that I can mount to a handlebar for bike shots or hold in my hand.
- IR would probably be out of the question since I would have to exactly aim the remote.
- The camera's self timer would work, but I'm thinking a wireless remote would give me a better timed shot.
- I'm using this research to buy a new camera. I'm leaning towards a high end compact camera like a Canon S90, G11, Samsung T500, etc... I'm also open to DSLR's with interchangeable lenses, but I'm trying to pack lite.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Kevin

Welcome to the forums!
Which camera brand?
I use an Opteka which is a rc remote on my D80. They make them for all the major brands I think and several here are using it. They are cheap on ebay...about 20; bucks.
Don't know if it is fast enough but you only have to point it in the general direction and can be used for up to 100 yards(claimed). I've used it at 50 or 60 yards. Helps if the batteries are fresh.
Re: Self portrait action shots
I have used one of these on both Canon and Sony DSLRs and they work great - in your pocket, through walls, etc. I don't know what type of remote ports other types of cameras have. - TF

Re: Self portrait action shots
Most of the advanced compact cameras I am aware of don't support a wireless remote so you may have to go with a DSLR. With a DSLR you will have more options for wireless remote releases like the ones Frog and OC mentioned.
Re: Self portrait action shots
Compacts don't normally have remote release connectors.
Infra-red is more usual.
I bought a Hahnel Giga T Pro remote Canon radio remote last week for a group portrait shot.
Far cheaper at £80 than Canon's LC5 at £470

I really have to get out of the habit of thinking dslr and when type of camera isn't listed to look at the poster's profile.
Good for you, Paul!
Re: Self portrait action shots
Very good! Thank you everyone for all the information. I looked at the Hahnel and Opteka websites and it looks like the only high end compact they'll support is the Canon G10/11. Still doing my research though. Maybe one of the new 4/3 dslr's might suite my needs.
Thanks again.
Re: Self portrait action shots
For excellent image quality and small compact size, the new rangefinder styled micro four thirds mount, and sonys new compact alpha series would be an excellent choice. You can have DSLR image quality without the massive DSLR size.
Sonys use APS sensors and have excellent video feature. But they aren't out yet, currently only micro four thirds are available. Anyway, they are certainly the best size to quality ratio you can get right now. Someone correct me if im wrong, but I believe they ALL have remote shutter releases as well.
