    A RAW Question

Hi I'm new here. I was wondering about what RAW converter is good. I am using the one that came with my Rebel XT and was wondering if it is any good? If not, what one can you suggest? Thanks.

    Re: A RAW Question

You might want to also post this question on the Canon forum and/or the Digital Imaging forum.

I'm not a big fan of the Canon software. I've been using Breeze Browser for Canon RAW conversions since I got my first digital SLR, a Canon EOS 1D. Breeze Browser is failry inexpensive, it's a great, fast browser, and it's a solid RAW converter.

Adobe Camera Raw, included in Photoshop CS and CS2, is more powerful and flexible than Breeze Browser. But the Adobe browser is very poor. I usually use Breeze Browser to find my images and then open them in CS2.

For the last 3-4 months I've been using Pixmantec Raw Shooter. There's a free version and a Premium version for $100. I have both and I think they're both wonderful. The tools will be a little confusing at first. But I think the workflow and conversion quality are excellent. If you want to keep it simple you might want to use Breeze Browser. But if the best quality is what you want, check out Pixmantec's software.

Thanks for suggestions. I dl'd the RawShooter free version and I must say the results are MUCH better than the canon software.

If you are on a Mac, then iPhoto handles RAW pretty well and I like it's browser capabilities. Then I use photoshop for any adjustments.

FWIW, I also use Breeze Browser for RAW conversions.

    Michael-
Have you done the most recent upgrade? I think competition has gotten fierce and they've made a bunch of changes. The price has gone up and I think you need to pay for the most recent version, even if you already have the software. I'm curious about it. I continue to use Breeze Browser as a browser. Even though Adobe Bridge is an improvement, it's still super slow. And Raw Shooter can only see RAW files.

I'm still running the older version. As money is very tight, I won't be thinking about an upgrade as long as the old version does what I want it to.

I just looked: there is an upgrade price, $35.
