question about flash

This question is in reference to a nikon coolpix S230. The camera was bought for my wife for last chistmas. She was using it yesterday fine and then all of a sudden it stopped taking pictures. I believe this comes down to the flash. The camera will take a picture when the flash is turned off. My question is what can I do to fix it? Or am I out of luck with it?

Bought last Christmas it should still be under warranty.
Are the batteries fresh./charged?

yes the batteries are the first thing that came to mind. they are charged and good to go.
the only thing is no receipt.
