Picture quality ???

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and new to photography. I use a Sony DSC-H10 camera. Today we went to the zoo, and most of my pictures came out coarse (not clear and crisp). Here is an example of what I am talking about. Any information would be helpful. Also, I had the camera set to "auto" mode.

Are you using the jpeg fine or whatever Sony calls it? It will be the one that gives you 3264 x 2448 : images.
You had a difficult shooting condition in the photo shown, shooting in shadow with the bright light behind. The camera did expose for the shaded areas.
If you shot, using jpeg basic or anything other than the largest, you will get shots like this.

The auto mode will take care of everything for you. But it's always going make the safest decisions and try to make sure there's no motion blur. In anything but the best light, this means fast shutter speeds and high ISO settings. And high ISO settings means noise (grain). I recommend setting the ISO yourself. The lower the number the less sensitive the camera is. Lower sensitivity means slower shutter speeds and more chance of blur when your subject is moving. But it also means less noise and better overall image quality. Frog is also onto something - look at the quality settings and make sure you're using the highest resolution and best quality your camera offers.

Hello just a newbiew here as well. I just want to ask, What is the exact resolution that need to be set for a perfect shots?was there a requirement for that?

Set your res to 8M ( Maxium )
if you are shooting faces , Is your face detection on. That has to be set, even in Auto mode.
Are you pressing the shutter half way down before shooting . This will set up the auto focus
Is your Anti-blur mode on
