Need suggestion for a camera

A friend of mine has a twelve year old and she wants to get him a camera that he can use at the Saints football games and zoom in to get his pictures. They usually set in the first section from the field. She is looking for something in the $300.00 price range with a good zoom. Not sure if he wants video or not so if you have some suggestion of a camera with and without video that would be great. I don't have any experience with this type of camera so I'm asking my fellow members for some help. Thanks for any suggestion or ideas that you may offer, Jeff

You might be able to pick up a Canon s95 on sale , if the above doesn't work out

Or a used Panny LX5. It is another great camera, however not a big zoom.

The G1X looks like a new contender, however it might not be in the price range you stated. Still I'd rather go for a relatively good one for the long term, if he gets interested in sport photography at some point.
