Possible sensor issue in bright light ???

    Hi All,
I've been having a problem with my Canon S95 lately when out in bright light.
I'm getting an area in the center of the picture that looks like a smug on the lens however the lens is clean.
    Your comments, suggestions, ideas welcome.

It looks more like something on one of the inner lens elements, right in the middle of the optical path. In bright light the diaphragm closes down and any obstruction in the center of the light path becomes more visible.

I hope it's still under guarantee. To repair it they probably need to replace the entire lens and shutter assembly. The price of repair is probably not far short of the value of the camera.

Does this happen with all of your lenses or just one?

If it just one lens then, as Charles said, it's an issue with something in your lens.

If it happens with all your lenses then it the camera itself.

The S95 is an expert's compact, small enough to fit in a pocket or in a pouch on my waist. I have one. I like it a lot.

The zoom lens is fixed. If there's dust in there then it means replacing a third of the camera.

My last compact camera finished with dust in it too (after a trip to the pyramids in Egypt on a windy day). Now I keep my S95 in a special closed compartment of my day bag, as far from dust as possible.

    Hi Charles, Hi Hector,
Thank you both for your comments and ideas.

I don't think the camera is still under warranty even if it was I believe this contamination is probably my fault. I use this camera a lot outdoors hiking and camping.

I am guessing one can not see these inter lenses from inspecting from the front?
Just looking with a bright light and 3X reading glasses I could not see anything on the lens.

I will try some experiments at different apertures to see if I can pinpoint this problem.

    thanks again for your help.

Upon further inspection. Brighter light and better glasses I can see a rather large piece of something stuck to the back side of the main lens almost dead center.
With gentle vibration I was unable to shift this contamination.

You mean a sort of pinkinsh spot that seems to be behind the front element with a greenish spot just behind?

I've got that on mine. It's just a reflection.

    Hi Charles,
I see that reflection as well. When you rotate the camera that reflection moves around a bit.
This object does not move and is light tan in color with a ragged edge. Like a small scrap of paper.
Very strange, In the environments I use this camera I would have thought sand maybe dirt.

I am still trying to think of a way to shift this piece to the bottom of the lens without dropping it to the floor, haha

It just looks like some dust has gotten itself trapped inside your lens element or on the sensor itself. If it's still under it's warranty, you could send it back and get them to fix it, or send you a new one.

    No longer under warranty.

    Quick up date:
I have tried thermal cycling the camera (10F to 100F) several times hoping the expansion/ contraction of the lens would dislodge this piece stuck to the lens with no luck.
I have tried mild vibration by placing the lens housing against hair clipper. With no luck.

I'm about ready to toss it in the draw with all the others that have developed issues over the years.
