Need Camera for Football / Band pics

Hi -New to the site and looking for advise. Been trying to decide on a camera for months now. Last night was the first football game, and I was dragging along an old 2.1 megapixel, so you can imagine the quality of shots. None worth keeping. :cryin:
Have two sons -- one plays football, other in the band. Need a camera that I can use, from the stands, that will allow me to crop the play or band section, and still have a good quality picture.
Most pics will be shared/online with a few of the 'great ones' printed, probably no larger than 8 x 10. Hoping for a point and shoot that is not too large of a camera. Would like to keep price around $350/$400
Very appreciative of any hints, tips, suggestions.
