need a camera

i am looking to buy a camera ,, i had a s5000 by fuji and it was a good camera ,,it has broken and now i need another ,, i am looking at a SLR type i think or should i stick with a point and shoot ,, do you guys and any ideas ?? i was looking at a s1500 by fuji and a canon d50 (used for 350 ) with a 18-50mm lens or is there any others ,,, i would like to spend about 400 or less
i dont know much about cameras ,, i have been told to look at Canon PowerShot SX20 and maybe a Panasonic FZ35 i dont know the differences ,,,,i thinnk i would like the SLR type cause of the snap time ,, seemd like when i used our s5000 and took a pic it took so long to snap ,,,
please help get a good one
