Here is the set-up i use an canon A75, a 6 foot tripod and two lamps with GE Reveal lighting. I wanted to know if there is anyway to make better pictures with a make shift set-up.

Sounds reasonable. Some things you could do to add some control are bounce the light off your walls or add umbrellas. I'm not familiar with the lights but it's nice to have lights on stands with umbrella mounts. Some kind of bounce or filtration allows you to soften the light and control it more.

White balance is a big deal with artificial lighting. I think your camera allows for custom white balance. I would really recommend making a custom white balance to ensure good, neutral color. There should be good directions in your A75 manual.

You might want to also post a question on our Studio and Lighting forum. Is this for small product photography? It would also help foryou to post a couple sample photos made with your setup and even a photo of the equipment you're using. There's a lot of studio knowledge on this site - especially in the Studio and Lighting forum. The more information you give us, the more we'll be able to help.
