Kodak Z650 or Canon S2IS? Need advice
    Hello,
I’m a newbie to this forum and new to digital cameras, but I’m not new to cameras in general, as I have used various SLR’s for many years. I’m in the process of shopping for a digital camera, and I need some advice and information on one issue.

I’m not really in the market for a high-end digital camera, but I would like a 5 or 6 megapixel with a 10x or greater optical zoom, and I’ve been reading reviews on two models that interest me, the Kodak Z650 10x optical zoom 6 megapixel, and the Canon S2IS 12x optical zoom 5 megapixel. Both seem to have the general features that I’d like, and I’m not really concerned with the 1 megapixel difference between the two, nor am I concerned with such characteristics as battery type, internal memory, memory card type, etc.

What I am concerned about is the issue of image stabilization. From what I’ve read, the Canon has image stabilization and the Kodak does not. So my question is, do I need image stabilization? I’ve read that if I don’t have it, I’d need a tripod for long zoom shots, but if that’s true, would I need a tripod for medium zoom shots too? In other words, without image stabilization, would I get less quality at EVERY focal length?

Which of these two cameras would you recommend?
    Thanks,
    Louis

Having handled both almost everyday I think I might be able to help you. The Image stablization does make a difference but with proper technique you could get close with the Z650. The Canon to me just feels like I have a DSLR in my hands and I don't get that feeling with the Kodak. Its a great camera but if you have larger hands it can be tricky holding it (at least for me). The S2 also has a faster motor for the zoom so it extends quicker than the Kodak. Then comes cost. The Kodak if I'm not mistaken is about 100 dollars less than the Canon. So if price is an issue than the Kodak wins. The Canon does have a few more features like a swivel LCD that can be helpful for shots close to the ground and over crowds and self portraits but that is more a gimmick.

Hold them in your hands and get what feels right.
