Switch to Aperture priority (on the mode dial) and use the knurled wheel on the front of the camera (under your right finger) to set the aperture.

The aperture ring is a legacy feature to preserve compatibility with cameras that are 10+ years old. Most Nikon lenses built in the last 5 years don't even have one. You control the aperture from the camera body.

Yes you don't touch the aperture on the lens. It has to be set at widest all the time.
You change the aperture with the camera.
    I'm guessing you meant a D80 ?
