Hello im new and already impresed.

Hey everyone im new here, thats right another noobi around photography i just started taking pictures about a year ago and created a Deviantart profile nothing special. no pro yet but hopefully will get there one day. i live in Canada im 20 and not married thank god. and have a question for a wonderful community. I have a budget so im thinking of either getting a Sony H7 or a Lumix Fz8 which is better between the 2 i mean where ever i look someone sais good and bad things about both. i have a Nikon F90 but thats film and im lazy with that so i need something just digital to look through before i take a nice picture with the Nikon. what do you think Gents .

Welcome aboard. I know nothing about Sony cameras but am real happy with my Panasonic FZ7. The only drawbacks would be common to all point and shoot cameras, and they aren't all that important to me.

Hey thank you for the reply, i went today and returned the Sony H7 and paid a little extra to get the Canon powerShot S5 IS , got a 4gb High speed SD card, and Canon rechargeable batteries. damn for what i paid i could have gotten a Nikon D40x for sakes. altogether it cost me 1025$ canadian with taxes with a 4 Year warranty. im impressed soo far on how it takes the pictures.

I think you'll be happy with the any of the cameras you listed. I think the Canon will likely have the best image quality, though. Sony would be my second guess for image quality and performance. And the Panasonic would be my pick for design and usability.

Since you mentioned the D40X, I'm going to encourage you to rethink your strategy. I think you'd be best served by returning the Canon, selling your film camera, and buying a digital SLR. Digital SLRs have much better image quality and performance than any compact. What you'd be giving up is the reach of the long lenses on the superzoom cameras you're interested in. To get that kind of focal length with a digital SLR you'll have to spend a lot of money. But if you can give that up, you can have a camera with much better image quality, faster response time, more long term flexibility, and better low-light performance (high ISO).

well thank you for the warm welcome, and the advice i couldn't have put it better my self. Now with the Nikon D40x it kind goes beyond my Budget, unless i collect enough to cover it, i have 14 days to return the Camera so i might try it out and if anything go for the Nikon. Also might land Job in Futureshop so maybe that will make me some good money and get a discount and just buy it.

At least you admit, it's just guesses. Remember, Panasonic sports the highly reputable Leica lens. Does anyone know of any site that shows side by side comparisons for advanced compact point and shoot cameras? I chose my Panasonic due to the high ratings and Leica lens. It also doesn't hurt to have extremely minimal shutter lag and much faster burst rate than the Canons. It would be nice to see how the image quality compares with others in the field. I read in Outdoor Photographer a few months ago that nowadays, advanced compact P & S cameras can rival lower end dslr cameras in image quality.

well i took this today with my Canon at 12X optical zoom, on 80 ISO, Program Mode. Not bad for all that zoom, The resolution i took it on was 640x480 just below 3M i think.





Now this i Took with my old Camera that i sold. The Fujifilm E510 5.2Mp. this was shot with 200 ISO on Vivid Color. not bad for a small P&S
