formatting cf cards

Can someone please explain in very simple terms what it means to format your cf card? How often do you need to do it? What is the purpose? As you can see, I am somewhat clueless about these cards. I have a Lexar 1G 80x card and have no idea how to use it other than to snap the pictures and print them out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
