Do you remember the first time...
you saw a digital camera? or heard about them?

I dont know why but this has been popping into my head lately. The first time I saw one was at a graduation ceremony in 2001. I ran into a friend's mom and she wanted a picture of me with my son. Then she held her camera out at an arms length and I remember thinking "what in the heck is this woman doing?" The thing was the size of her head, I swear!

    October 2000
When I visited the Universal studios theme park in October 2000 the souvenir photographers were fitted out with Kodak DSC DSLR's. This was a Nikon F5 body with a 3Mpix Kodak sensor and a huge battery pack. I mean really huge.

I thought it looked interesting but about as versatile as the Polaroid cameras it replaced. You really needed a home base close by to unload the images and get them ready for the tourists to see a few minutes later.

I didn't see digital cameras as being something I was going to get into soon. Some time later I was thinking about where I could retire to one day and one of my selection criteria was the availability of a shop where I could buy my favourite Pro films..

I think the first digital camera I saw belonged to a roommate in college, but I don't remember the year. The camera was a Sony Mavica I believe. The memory "card" was a 3.5" floppy disc.

The first digital camera I had a chance to use was a 1.3 MP Olympus (I forget the model number). It had that cool Olympus clamshell design. Up until then I didn't think that digital had a chance. After taking some photos with it and looking at the printed 4x6 prints, my opinion reversed 180 degrees. I knew then that digital was going to be big and eventually knock out film. That happened much sooner than even I predicted.

They'd already had better ones out by then, but the first I ever physically saw was a cheap 'pen' camera my aunt got on home shopping network.

Don't remember the first one I saw but remember hearing and reading about them and when 3mpix was so awesome you could actually make a 5x7 without losing too much. I ignored them for a long time until I wanted to get back into photography and found out they actually made dslr cameras.
I do remember my wife's family had a reunion several years ago and I when I took some pics of some kids at a drinking fountain, they all came over to look at the back of my camera and I it took me a moment to figure out why.

That was the first digital camera I ever saw or handled, which was more than 10 years ago. I didn't actually own a digital camera myself until 2006.
