Digital Model That Allows Simple Photo Rename After Shot
    Hello,

I take multiple images of multiple items a day. I am looking for a digital camera that allows a user to take a photo and let's them "simply" rename the photo through the camera's interface just before or after the photo is taken. The camera would then transfer though USB to the computer naming the photos in the following way...

    1234.jpg
    1234_2.jpg
    1234_3.jpg
or whatever name I entered in the camera's naming interface.jpg

Quality is not the biggest issue since these photos are to be used for a web resolution of 72dpi. Does anyone know of a camera that would allow me to do this? This would save me a lot of :mad2:.

    All the best,

Welcome to the site. I don't know of any camera that allows you to change the name of a file, but it could be possible. I do know that photoshop CS2 has a renaming feature that is very easy to use and allows you to give your file any name you want, and you can add a sequence # to the end. I'm not sure if other versions of PS have the same feature, but it works great in CS2. Good luck!

Hi. Thank you for your reply. The deal is that my serialization is coming from another source. I have a number assigned to my subject that must remain contant. In other words. I a small #1234 label on what it is that I am photographing. I also have a line item in MS Excel or some type of inventory program that is also assigned #1234. Since item #1234 may have 40 images, and I do not want the #1234 label to show in the pictures, I need to find some way to name the images right when they are taken so there is no guess work when associating the images to the Excel line item. Batch rename after the process is final will rename the photos in bulk, but not associate the photo with an item number.

Again, thank you very much for your reply.

    All the best,

I'm not entirely sure I am following your logic, but I'll assume:
    (1) You are taking the pictures manually (not computer controlled, or something)
    (2) When changing from Item #1234 to #1235, there is some manual intervention required
    (3) Some amount of post-processing, including renaming, is either required, or at least acceptable.

One thought is to record the beginning and ending file sequence numbers assigned by the camera for each item "run", and enter that information into the post-processing, so that the "batch" file renaming could include the associated item identification.

Another thought is, since changing items requires some manual intervention, and if you could use memory cards instead of downloading directly through the USB, you could obtain several, small sized cards (just large enough to hold a "run" of an item) and change the card between items. You could then mark the cards (with a post-it even) and use that during the post-processing.

    Just some thoughts...
