    Desperate Interpolatoin Help!!!
    I am buying a Digital camera in the near future, one i was looking at has 4MP CCD but goes up to 8mp via interpolation? What the? Is interpolation any good whatsoever, or should i scrub this idea... I need a reply within the next few days!!! Email me your answer: iarazmatazi@hotmail.com

    Forget the in-camera interpolation. You can do the same thing with much better results in PhotoShop or other imaging software.

    Interpolation is a well known mathematical technique that "fabricates" pixels that are in-between real pixels. This works very well up to a point. FWIW, interpolation is used for data in math and science all the time.

    I agree, forget about the 'in-camera' interpolation. Just get a cam with 8m, the prices are going down every month. Even in you use software, remember you're loosing original data from your pics.

    No, interpolation does not lose data, it adds "fake" data to the image. The original pixels are still there.

    I did not know that, I've always been told the pic does degrade. I did look this up and I stand corrected. Thanks, now I'll start to use it more myself when appropriate.

    Degrades is a relative term. Adding some interpolation won't be visible. Start adding a lot and your fake pixels start taking over. That will indeed degrade the image even though you haven't lost any real pixels.

    On the other hand, most compression techniques get rid of real pixels and degrade the image that way.
