Everyone always hypes up the D70 which is 6.1 megapixels. The Coolpix 8700 is 8.1 megapixels AND a grand cheaper. I compared the two side by side here, and there was little difference. Why the hell is a smaller megapixeled camera, with less features, MORE expensive? Somebody...set m straight.
You have to TEST the cameras. The D70 has a larger sensor=better SNR=better ISO range; also smoothness of shots at low ISOs. Better lenses available (more money), interchangeable. Autofocus and shutter release timings are literally NIGHT AND DAY. With the D70 you practically get the shot as soon as you trip the shutter release, with the 8700...wait a second for focus lock, wait for the camera to think, then it may decide to take the shot. Manual controls, OPTICAL viewfinder that actually shows the shot.

You do lose the preview screen and have to hold the camera to your eye to see the shot. Lenses are much more expensive, especially for good ones. Your call.
