    Canon 450D/Rebel "locking"
I recently was taking a series of photos in strong sunlight and found the flash sometimes popped up although not dull conditions. The camera then started freezing, the only way to clear it was to remove the battery and reseat it. It would then work for a while before locking again. Eventually I could only take 2 or 3 pics before freezing. Is this a real failure or simply a firmware fix?

    Any guidance most appreciated!

OK an update. I have loaded the latest firmware.

Seemed OK but when I tried the 55-250mm lens it froze after 3 shots.

Reset it by removing the battery and of course it is not locking again. So is intermittent but clearly not fixed though. Anyone else had this?

I have a 450D and have not experienced anything like that. I can't think of any reason why that would happen. If your camera is still under warranty, I would recommend contacting Canon. If not, maybe take it to a camera shop and let someone else have a look at it.

    Good luck.

Have you cleaned the lens and body contacts?

Could it be a memory card issue? When the "lock up" happens is there a red light that comes on? What size card are you using? How are you saving the pictures Raw or Jpeg or both?

    Hi thanks for the replies.

The contacts look OK although I have not cleaned them.

The memory card is an 8gb SDHC ultima pro. It does not seem too slow to write and to be honest I cannot remember if the red light stayed on when iot locked. I have just run 20 quick shots and of course it is not locking now! The pictures are Jpeg at high quality generally about 4mb for each picture.

I will test while swopping lenses and see if I can find some common factor. I would rather the thing broke properly so I would know it was a real problem!

    Thanks for the update.

That is truly the hard part, trying to reproduce it a few times to make sure that is the reason.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I too have a similar problem of my 450D locking up. It also started a go slow on taking multiple images, and didn't always display the led focus lights.

I rang Canon and thet told me to update the firmware and reset all camera settings. My problems started after activating the live view mode. They also said it may be camera/lens contacts.

This sounds like a software bug to me so I have just taken the advice from Canon and updated the firmware ver to 1.1.0 (found on google) If this doesn't cure it I will send the camera to a service centre before the 1 year warranty runs out.

All the best with your issues . . . .

Well I finally sent the camera off to Canon dreading the not under warranty disclosure.

However I received an e-mail and a text saying it had been received. A week later (yesterday) it came back having had various internals replaced.

Seems OK. Needs a full test to be sure. The only drawback is I have bought the 500D/T1i as I was not sure when the 450 would come back and I am away for the weekend and need a camera. Received the 500 today and waiting for the battery to charge.

Wathc out for a 450 on e-bay very soon- one careful owner!
