I'm new to the digital camera game and as my first purchase have recently picked myself up a Sony Cybershot DSC-V1.

One thing I wonder, is it possible to take black and white pictures using features on the camera, or do I have to take everything in full colour then convert using my photo editing software ?

    Media Assassin,

The DSC-V1 can do black and white along with other effects natively, there should be a choice as to what effect you want to use in the menu system or setup of the camera. I am not to familar with this camera so I am not sure as how the menu's or set up works so hopefully someone else can assist further if needed.

Most compact digital cameras have a black and white mode. However, if you have the time and care a lot about the quality, you'll get much better results doing the conversions yourself, with Photoshop. There are a bunch of ways to do it, and there is a bit of a learning curve. I use Channel Mixer adjustment layers to do black and white conversions. I like that much better than what the cameras or a simple Photoshop conversion can do. It's very tuneable and you can get the same effects as colored filters with black and white film.

I realize I might be telling you a lot more than you asked for. But I thought it would be nice to give you an idea of what a little more effort and good software can do.
