Which 8gb SD for Canon G9 (and where to buy it!?)
Hi - I am about to buy a Canon G9 - but i'm not sure which SD card to get (and where's best to get it from).

I'm after an 8gb SD card - but which should i get and where should I get it from that's reliable/ trustworthy (i imagine there's loads of dodgy / mis-labelled cards out there!).

    Pls help

    Thx!

Not sure why you want that large a card but:

B&H is an extremely reliable dealer with a perfect rep. You might find it a buck or 2 cheaper, but reliability of the dealer and knowing your purchase is safe is worth a dollar or 2.

Thx a lot for that though i'm in the UK

    - am I silly getting an 8gb card? It's for video'ing - which i'm sure takes up a lot of space. Or should I just get a 4gb card?

B&H will ship to the UK, although it's probably not worth it for a memory card. I will round up one of our UK members to give you some ideas.

Normally, I wouldn't recommend an 8 GB card because I prefer spreading my data out on more than one card in case I lose one or have one stolen. Plus, the pricing sweet spot is never the highest capacity card. Right now I'd buy 2 or 4 GB cards. But for video, the 8GB card might be the right thing to do. However, if I were you, I'd buy a 4 GB card and see if that does the job. Video does use up memory quickly. But the 4 GB card might be adequate. And if it isn't, then you can go ahead and buy the 8 GB memory card. You can never have too much memory or too many cards. So it's no big deal if you end up buying two. Plus, if and when you decide you do need the 8 GB card, it will be cheaper.

I was going to ask why 8GB ?
Then I saw you were interested in video, not stills.
I don't know if there is any restriction on video length on the G9, whether it can use the full capacity or not. I have to go check the specs ...

OK back with you - Canon says "Movie Length ¹ Depending on memory card speed / capacity" but if I look higher up the spec it says "Movie Length Up to 4GB or 1 hour (L1, L2 and M)¹"

So that means there's little point in a 8GB card, 4GB maximum.
But aren't you going to need to edit the video anyway?
If so then I'd be far happier with the video segments on separate cards.
Personally, I prefer not to have all my eggs in one basket.

For stills, I use either 2G or 4G cards depending on the camera resolution.
I would do the same thing with video, 2G is too large for almost everything.
Everything except on-track race video, where the more the better :)

    For a UK supplier?
I use CostCo (my local branch is in Reading) because their price on 2G SanDisk Ultra II CF cards is competitive, no postage and it's on the way home from work. Downside - you have to be a CostCo member.

On the internet, I usually check Park Cameras (Canon Pro delaer), Warehouse Express, Ffordes Photographic, Jessops (in case they have a good special offer), Mr Memory.

Today on sale at Jessops SanDisk Ultra II 2G cards are £33, Warehouse express £23 - even adding their £3.99 delivery it's cheaper !
Ffordes only have the extreme III (2x faster) at a similar price..
From my regular suppliers Park cameras win today, at £20.99 for the SanDisk Ultra II 2G. even beating the CostCo price !

They are convenient, highstreet shops, but not necessarily a good price.
They have recently stopped price matching to internet suppliers and are instead only claiming the "lowest price in the high street".

I don't know if it's applicable in the UK, but there is a rebate deal on Sandisk's ExtremeIII cards. 4GB for $60US with a $30US rebate at beachcamera.com.
