16X20 Print Size

I am thinking of buying a 9mp camera (Fuji) which will record in RAW and 3488x2616 pixels (which I assume is Jpeg). Is it possible to print to 16X20 with this camera without using software such as PhotoShop? If not, what would be the maximum size print I could expect from this camera? Thanks in advance for you time.

Some people say that 300dpi is the only way to go, but I've printed that size at 240dpi and had great results. The pixel dimension divided by the resolution (dpi) will give you the maximum dimension you can use without interpolation (increasing the file size in Photoshop or Genuine Fractals, etc). So - this works out to about 14-1/2" x 11" at 240 dpi. You might still have good results at 180dpi, which works out to about 19-3/8" x 14-1/2".

Another idea would be to print one at a resolution of 180, and also try one where you increased the file size to 4800x3840 pixels in Photoshop, which works out to 240dpi and see which one looks better. If you try this, let us know the results. When I've printed at that size, it's been from a 6mp camera file, and I've increased the file size in Photoshop. That method works for me, so I haven't tried printing at the native resolution.

BTW - the pixel dimension of the image (3488x2616 pixels) isn't determined by the file type (jpeg, tiff, raw, etc). That's the resolution of the sensor regardless of what file type you're using. You probably have the option of lower resolution settings too (but obviously this isn't a good idea here).

What "another view" said and...

You should not be afraid of interpolation. It is a well proven mathematical technique that is used all the time outside of photography As long as you don't overuse it, it works very well with no ill effects. With a 9MP camera, 16x20 is extremely easy to do. I used to do 16x20 with 35mm film that were OK but not great. Digital quality surpasses 35mm film by quite a bit.

I'll bet that this camera will come with a copy of Photoshop Elements. Once again, I'll recommend Scott Kelby's books as a great way to get started with this program.

And I don't play on TV either...

But, I know guys and gals with 6 MP camera's make 16X20's. I don't know how much, if any, Photoshop is involved, but the prints I've seen looked great.

Photoshop Elements is a great program, and I saw that version 4 has just come out. Lot's of capabilities there for $99.

I just ordered a 16x24 photo I took with my 6mp DRebel. Should be here tomorrow or Saturday. I will let you know what I think when it gets here. It's the larges I've ever ordered so I'm a little excited/nervous. :)

My order from Mpix showed up at my front door this morning with my 16x24 print. I have to say, I'm very impressed with the quality of the print and I won't hesitate to go that large again with the right photo. I wonder how much larger I can go... :D
