Canon EX Flashes

Hey guys,

I just purchased a D60 and am interested in getting a flash. I know there's four or five EX flashes that will work and am just wondering if the differences are that noticable? I forget the model numbers (and too lazy to get them) but...is like the 220 EX much worse than the 550 EX?

Glad to hear about your new camera. That's going to be really nice for you.

The main difference between the 550EX and other EX flashes is that the 550 has full manual controls built into the flash. I think all of the other EX flashes only offer ETTL. The other difference between the differnent models is the output. The 550 is the most powerful and the 420EX is the next most powerful. I think a lot of people start with, and are very happy with the 420EX. But if you want more control, you'll need to go with the 550 or a third-party flash.

Interesting. I have looked at the 420 EX, though the wallet is a little hurt with christmas gifts and my personal gifts (and school) I've already found out the internal flash is horrible...so I guess unless I want to restrict myself to only outdoors, I guess I'll have to pick one up.

Just to tempt you some more - I have the 420EX and I love it - I've used it for about 4 years now with my Rebel 2K, 300D and 350XT. It's an excellent flash.

You might want to check out used......I looked on KEH website - they sell a lot of used equipment and are very reputable, but they are sold out.

The 580EX has more power than the 550EX (and uses less battery power).

Jared, for your D60 the 420 should be fine. If you look around you could possibly find a used flash even cheaper though. A Sunpak 433D can be had cheap (I paid $55 for one at Roberts Distributors in Indy) and it was (actually still is) very good, but having the 580EX it's now a backup flash. Just make sure it has a Canon hotshoe or you'll burn up the flash and/or camera. All Sunpacks for Canons are marked as such.

Sunpak 5000AF is another option that will work with the D60 as well and is very similar to the 550EX as well.

At our company Christmas party I used an FD mount flash on a digital rebel and it did ok.

Thanks for the comments guys. Maybe once I make a little more spending money (dang gift buying) I'll pick up a 430ex or try to get a 420 used. We will see.
