    Wide Angle recommendations?????
Any recommendations for a 1D Mark III in the WA arena?

I've been reading until my eyes have crossed and would love to know who has fallen in love with what wa lens and why?

Normally, I don't like to buy third party lenses, but this is a case where I'm seriously considering it.

Anyway, no need to post links to wa lens posts here. I've read them all a lot. I'd just like to hear from people who have had them for awhile now. What you are liking or not liking about yours and would you recommend it or not. ????

    TY!

    Re: Wide Angle recommendations?????
Hmmm.. Since the 1D Mk III uses the APS-H sensor, that leaves out any of the EF-S lenses. Does anyone make an ultra wide angle lens for that size sensor?

I have heard great things about the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 but I don't have any experience with it myself. I use the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 on both my D40 and my Elan 7n film camera. This lens is designed for the APS-C sensor, but it works great on the Elan. You have to zoom out to about 18mm to avoid vignetting. Just a guess, but you might be able to get away with 15 or 16mm on your Mk III, maybe more. I realize that may not be the best option out there, but it's a great lens and has great reviews and is 1/3 the price of the Canon lens I mentioned.

I love my Tokina 12-24 f4. I know it's a bit slow but the price is right and it has wonderful clarity the colors are always spot on where I want them.

Thanks for the replies. This is the lens that I keep coming back to, but I'm confused as to how it would work with my Mark III. Since it is a 1.3 crop I was hoping to go as wide as possible with the lens.

I keep bumping into the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. Great reviews and performs beautifully on a Mark III. Not f/2.8 though, but I still have to define how important that would be for me in wa shots.

The Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is crazy expensive.

If you're interested in the Tokina 11-16mm, send Liz a PM. She has this lens and is selling it because it's too heavy for her.

As far as how it would work on your MKIII, I'm guessing you will get some vignetting on the wide end because this lens is designed for APS-C sized sensors. So basically you may only find it usable on the long end of the lens. I like the idea of fast lenses, but I haven't found the need for it on a WA lens. When I'm using my WA lens, I'm usually shooting for lots of DOF so I'm always shooting stopped down so the f/2.8 wouldn't get used much for me.

I don't think you can even physically mount the Tokina on the 1D - the alignment pins are different.

With the APS-H sensor, you're stuck with lenses for full-frame bodies.

I had the 17-40mm f/4L and it was nice. Only used it on the 10D and 30D so I don't know how the corners would be with the 1D. Not sharp enough for me wide open plus the f/4 (without IS) didn't make it a convenient walk-about lens. Sharp though when stopped down 1~2 stops.

I currently have the 16-35mm f/2.8L II but haven't really used it much at all - so I can't tell you how well it performs compared to the 17-40mm. I use my WAs with my 5D so the 24-105mm is sufficiently wide for what I shoot.

    Good luck

I was wondering about this. I know I can't mount my EF-S lens on my film camera, but my Tokina lens mounts just fine. Definitely something to look into before making a purchase.

Mike, thank you. I appreciate your knowledge and value your opinion.

Having bought a lens from Liz before really makes me want to buy from her again. My most used lens was hers and lets just say impeccable equipment and flawless transaction doesn't even describe it.

My concern with the Tokina is if I do go to a ff camera I won't be able to use it.

The more research I've done the more I think f/2.8 isn't the biggest selling point for me either..... I'm glad you told me you haven't found much use for it with your wa lens. It's backing up what I'm reading.....

Thanks again for your thoughts and help.

Thank you Loupey! This is info I needed and having a hard time finding it. I thought it could fit the Mark III, but not ff.

I find lens shopping one of the most frustrating things.

If you ever get going with your 16-35 I'd love to know how you think it stacks to the 17-40.

I also appreciate your advice. When I was looking for a macro your help was so appreciated. I ended up with a completely different lens then I originally planned after reading your feedback.

    Thanks again,

Jeta on my 2N I really like how my 17-40 works out. Let me know if would like to see some examples?

Um, SHYA! Please, please post examples. I've seen some beauties on the Canon forum, but not from photogs whose work I'm familiar with.

I'm also curious where the sweet spots are and how you feel about the sharpness at what settings etcetcetc.... What types of things do you use the lens on and how often do you use it? TY Jimmy!

Jeta - I dug out these samples of the 17-40mm f/4L.

Both images are uncropped from the 10D (APS-C) and shot RAW with post processing done. Cropped sections to show detail. Both at 17mm (I believe - exif data included).

Here is a test shot of the 16-35mm f/2.8L II.

Taken with the 5D at 16mm (exif included). Uncropped and cropped. SOOC with no post processing.

Canon 17-40L - I owned this lens and it was one of my all time favorites - the other was the Canon 24-105L IS.

Here are a few shots done with the 17-40. The last one I shot through a car window. My god-daughter was waiting in the car to leave for her first communion and the 17-40 happened to be on my camera - I never would have thought to use this lens for a portrait - and I was amazed how this "close-up portrait" turned out.

Unfortunately I only have the 40mm images available now to upload (new pc)

here are couple:) With the 1.3 crop it is just shy of 28mm which is what I have for film. Maybe in the future I would like to go wider? I think you will like the lens.
