I finally purchased a Rebel XT DSLR. I didn't go new, because a refurb cost was too good to pass up. Here are some test shots. Tell me what you think. Minimal processing was used.
Some nice shots. I'm still shooting with my XT, though I'm getting ready to upgrade. With the money you saved on the refurb, I'd suggest looking into the 50mm f/1.8 lens. You should be able to find it for under $75.00, and it will improve your low-light capabilities enough to make it worthwhile. It's also an awesome lens for portraits.

Those images look pretty damn good. The lenses you have now are ok. I actually think the Canon 18-55mm kit lens is not bad - for a kit lens. However, the image quality 50mm Medley suggested will blow you away. You will notice the difference.
On the other hand, you could just hold on to your money and shoot with what you have until you feel the need to upgrade. If you're happy with the images, then don't worry about it. Concentrate on technique and composition. Better picture-taking is always more important than better equipment.

Thanks. I can't believe the results of the Tamron. The zoom is now 1.5x more so it's now a 150-450mm zoom. Just to give you an idea: Where I am standing is close to the actual point of view from the cliff. The zoom lens all the way out to 300mm (450 converted) showed enough detail that I could identify a person driving across the bridge. That's with a shaky hand and no tripod.
contactsb, images look good to me. They are quite sharp, so this says the XT and the lens (please tell us) you used work quite well together. Not being from your part of the world, I am curious as to the bridge in the first picture - location, river crossing, from where to where, etc. I often wish that more posters would tell us about the context of their images because it adds significant value to the posting for those of us who aren't from wherever they are. Thanks.

These shots were taken with the Rebel XT Kit lens. I used to own a Rebel G SLR and just converted to a DSLR.
The bridge in the picture is the George Washington Bridge that crosses the Hudson River going into New York City (Manhattan). The New Jersey side of the bridge is on a cliff, the New York side is more level. It is a great area to take shots of the city skyline, but only the uptown area of New York. In West New York (in New Jersey), there is a cliff there that is better for taking downtown shots of New York. It's an amazing view and more interesting in my opinion.

Thanks for the compliments.
One more thing... here are the lenses I own:
• Canon XT 18-55mm EF-S (Kit Lens)
• Canon Rebel G 35-80mm EF (Kit Lens)
• Tamron 100-300mm (converted to 150-450 in digital)
The Tamron is unbelievable. You could actually identify the drivers in the cars passing by in the test shots. And that's without a tripod.
Welcome and congratulations. I also have an XT and have found the more I use the camera and read and reread the manual the more amazed I am at what this little camera can do. The kit lens is my walk-around lens. I have and us the 50mm F1.8 for low light and portrait. It is by far the best lens for the buck that Canon offers. Great Images keep up the good work.

Thanks. I'm pleased with the camera so far. Hopefully, it will continue outputting up to these standards.
