Replacement for the 50D?

Last week, I was at a camera store here in Southeastern Lower Michigan. The person behind the counter was talking with another customer, and he mentioned that according to his source at Canon, they plan on releasing a successor to the EOS 50D within the next year. Does anyone know more about this camera and what features it will incorporate?

Not heard any rumours. All the DSLR manufacturers are supposed to be working on an improved video mode i.e. one that allows you to autofocus while taking the video. Must come out one day

Usually Canon replace the model in this segment every 18 months (or less) and the 50D has already been out for 16 months. However they just released the 7D which has taken over the difficult task of competing with the Nikon D300/D300s.

The 50D replacement has to continue to be better than the Nikon D90 but not as good as the 7D. My guess is that they will just put the 18Mpix sensor from the 7D in the 50D body, change the badge and edit the user manual

I just read a thread on the Canon Rumors website that said pretty much the same thing. Most likely going to be a 60D with the 7D sensor in a 50D body coming out the first part of 2010. Maybe even throw in the flash control of the 7D and the AF. Of course it's anybody's guess as to exactly what it will be and when/if it will come out.

I thought the 7D was the 50D replacement :blush2:

Otherwise seems like too many series to me - entry level (XS/XSi/T1i), enthusiast 1 (50D, 60D?), enthusiast 2 (7D), enthusiast/pro (5D), pro (1D, 1DS).

But who knows (except for those Canon folks).

Why place the 7D and the 5D in different categories?

The 7D and the 5D are both expert/low-end pro bodies, like the D300s/D700. Lots of pros are using APS-C sensor bodies and I think that they will continue to do so. These are really serious systems. The bodies are similar (almost identical in the case of the Nikons), and you have the choice between 24x36 format or APS-C.

Canon and Nikon both provide some serious lenses to go with the small format (the 18-55 f2.8 and 15-85/16-85)

I think there is a substantial difference between the 7D and the 5D as compared to the 7D and the 50D. As for keeping the 7D and 5D in different categories, I think they sort themselves that way with the inherent target markets they each cater to.

I can't see keeping the x0D-series going with the introduction of the 7D. Unless they pull the reins a bit and provide a 60D with slightly less features than the 7D (which makes the already small difference that much smaller - but I admit I've not used the 7D so I can't say this objectively), it doesn't make sense to me. Otherwise, the 60D will leap-frog past the 7D and the 7D becomes an anomaly.

If it is true that they do keep the x0D-series in addition to the new 7D line, the future progression of mid-range cameras will go something like 50D, 7D, 60D, 8D, 70D....

Kinda weird. Definitely confusing.

When the 7D was introduced, that seemed to be the right camera for me. On paper it had everything that I wanted that I'm not getting from my 40D BUT I still have no desire to upgrade. On paper the 7D seems to be the next step up from the X0D series with one big exception. PRICE. Feature wise I think it is a step in the right direction with the exception of packing 18 MP onto the sensor but I don't see the gain as being worth the extra $700 unless you want to shoot video.

If Canon were to not keep going with the X0D series I think they would leave a huge hole in their line up based on price point. Without something in the middle consumers would have the choice of going from a $600 T1i to a $1700 7D or to another brand. I don't see Canon giving up that market share.

Good point about the price.

Remember that the 50D was introduced at $1,400 last year (it was actually higher than that when it first arrived). So with the weakened dollar, the price of $1,700 for a 7D is still in line with the x0D series.

I suspect that the 7D will drop to $1,200~$1,400 immediately upon arrival of any replacement - be it an 8D or 60D or whatever - and will continue to drop like every other camera has done during a phase out.

Time will tell. I'm in no hurry.

The more I think about it, the more I wish they would come out with a 60D. I wouldn't mind some thing in the low $1k range . I want a new backup to replace my 30D and supplement my 5D2.

The 60D should be like the T2i but with a better body and faster FPS. It can do with less focusing points, make do with a single processor, also no built in remote trigger so it's less of a camera compared to the 7D.

Just my 2 cents. I'm not trying to start rumors.

I'm just not in the mood to spend money on the 7D although it's a beautiful camera.
