Remote switch for 1000d

Hi i have just got a remote switch for my 1000d,but when i use it i cant get the screen to work also i am unable to depress half way to focus with it,as i am new to DSLR is there a setting i need to change on the camera to make this work thanks.

I am new also and found the same issue. On the 1000D press the 'set' button to bring up the liveview display (providing you have enabled it in the menu).

As far as focusing, I found I had to use the button on the camera to autofocus but I quickly got over that as I was in low light and the autofocus struggled so I went to manual focus and found it easier. I also turned IS off while on the tripod as the manual suggested.
