Newbie needs help

Hi everyone!

I'm kind of new in photography and I need help. My friend gave me her old canon slr av1 because she hasn't used it for the longest time. It's old but I'm excited 'coz I know I'll learn a lot from this camera.

Anyway, I need help. The advance film lever is not moving as far enough as it should be. I haven't placed a film yet because I'm afraid I might waste it.

Do you guys can give me any tip? Is there anything else I can do or try before I take it to a repair shop?

Does it have film in it? The lever will do this if it is at the end of the roll. That's all I know that can cause this.
