    Quality wide zoom, L IS

    My problem is which one?

I've got the 24-70 and even on a 1DS body it's not wide enough if I am lucky and get a pit lane hot pass.
Looks like I don't need to be much wider for the pit stops see below.
But for the grid walk, wider would definitely be better (as an option).

So from your experience folks, what's the best wider zoom?
Is there one that is rectilinear, or nearly so?

Take a look at the bottom of the trifecta, the 16mm - 35mm f2.8 L. Love my copy. Don't know of anything in this range that is rectilinear. Few examples of the photos this lens can produce.

If you want to stick with Canon and L series, your options are pretty limited. The 16-35mm f2.8L as mentioned already, and the 17-40mm f4 L. Neither have IS but do you really need it at these focal lengths?

Tokina makes a 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX lens for about $850 (US).

    Sigma makes a 12-24mm f/4.5 - 5.6

That's really about all there is for zooms that I could find doing a quick search at B&H.

    IS?
probably not at the wide end.
16-35 probably my next lens then.
sell 2x 70-200, get mkII of that lens.
sell 1.4x and 2x, get mkIII of those.
get second mortgage on house for that 200mm with built in 1.4x all weather
