Sandisk 1GB Ultra CF failure on Canon Equipment

I just wanted to share a problem I had over the weekend.

I found my old Canon G2 and decided to use it on Friday at Disneyland. I brought along one of my 1GB cards. After taking 2 shots I would get a CF error and would have to reboot the camera and format the card. After changing a bunch of settings, nothing would improve the situation and I would still get a CF error with the camera stating the card was full. After more toying around, it got even worse where I could not format the card.

Fortuantely, I was really there to take video since we took pictures last time we were there. I didn't feel any loss.

I put the same cf card in one of my Canon DSLR and it could not reformat the card. I consider the card permanently damaged. I bought the card from Costco and I'll see if they will take it back. They have a loose return policy.

So is the G2 broken? No, it is not. I stuck the original 16MB CF card back in and it worked fine. YES, 16MB!!! I'm assuming that this 5+ years old digital point and shoot can't handle the the size of a 1GB CF card. I use to have a 128MB card but I don't know where it is. I'm hoping to find a simple 256 card to use with the P&S without problem.

The lesson of the story is to test your equipment from time to time before shooting whatever event especially when the tickets to mentioned theme park cost more than an old 4MP digital camera.

You might want to hurry. I think you'll find that the policy is not as loose as you remember. I work at a Costco in Oregon, and we're in the beginning stages of phasing in a 90 return policy on all electronics and major appliances. I doubt that anyone would give you much grief over a memory card, as the policy is geared more toward the plasma TV's and washers and dryers.

The change in policy came to us from Costco corporate in Issaquah within the last few weeks, so you should probably still be safe. It may not even have gotten to your Costco yet, but even so, it's comming. Just thought I'd share that with you now, before it's too late.

As a side note, I've never had a problem with Sandisk. I use their 1GB and 2GB cards, but have only ever used them in my DRebel.

Thanks for the info Joe. Our costco already has signs on the 90 day return policy for tvs and computers. I didn't notice appliances. I try this week.

I have a DRebel as well and only have trouble with my CF cards when I use it on one DSLR then another without reformatting.

yeah i think you already nailed the problem. your camera can't use a 1gb card. Check sandisk's site to make sure.

I can read a card through the camera, with a card reader, or in the slots of two different computers. Occasionally one of these options will not read a card but I have yet to have a card not being readable or formatable in all these methods.
