    Need a wide angle lens

I want to purchase a wide angle lens for my Canon 40D, want to use it for nature shots as well as interior design shots and maybe some family photos. any suggestions.

Re: Need a wide angle lens

I have the Tokina 12-24 f/4 lens and I love it. Several other members have the same lens, and they all speak very highly of it as well. Sigma makes a 10-20mm lens, but I have no experience with it. Canon makes a 10-22mm lens as well. I have heard great things about this lens as well, but I went with the Tokina because of the price, and constant f/4 aperture.

    Ari-
I have used the Tokina 12-24mm and the Canon 10-22mm. I love them both. I currently own the Tokina because it's costs less than the Canon and I like the fixed f/4 aperture. But I really miss the extra 2mm on the wide end of the Canon. Both lenses are excellent, though. And from what you say you want to shoot, I think the Tokina will be great for you.

Tokina and Tamron both also have new lenses coming out or maybe even already available. The new Tokina is an 11-16mm f/2.8! And the new Tamron is a 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5.

There are also lots of discussions here on this very subject, as well as plenty of reviews for the available lenses. You might also search the forums. And here's a link to another recent discussion started by Liz, who just bought the Tokina 12-24mm lens:

    Hope that helps!

Re: Need a wide angle lens

Yes, I just purchased the Tokina - and it's a great lens. However, PJ confused me by posting info about a new Tokina 11-16mm/f2.8. I wish I knew how much the price of this one is with that aperture! I did some research and came up with price ranges from $530 to $900. In the meantime the Japan version is out and on Ebay for $700.

However, back to the Tokina. It's a beautiful lens. Here is another link to a thread about wide angle lenses with more options, and more shots done with the Tokina 12-24, Canon, Sigma, and others.

Can you please review why a fixed f/4 is good, and what are the advantages or disadvantages of both lenses are the price diffrence is roughly $200, which is not that substantial.

Re: Need a wide angle lens

    Ari,

I also have the Canon 10-22 and I love it. It really opened up a new world for me. I ended up going with the Canon model over the other brands because I consistently read better reviews for the Canon. I have to say, though, having a fixed f/4 (which I think the Tokina has?) would be a nice plus. This lens does need a fair amount of light. I find that I have this lens on my camera a lot, usually for capturing a wide view when I'm too close to something, rather than to shoot panoramic shots.
Also, I hardly even shoot it at 10mm. What I think I'm finding is that having it go all the way to 10mm makes the 12-14mm range very usable and crisp. Don't get me wrong, the 10mm shots look great too but, in most shots, there is something that looks rather distorted. All in all, I would definitely recommend this lens. It feels worth the 600ish I paid.
