    Rebel XTi In The House

Couldn't wait for Canon to send me one. Best Buy got my money. Now I'm going to go shoot some Labor Day mini-moto action to test out the AI Servo AF. I sure hope this baby is as good as it looks on paper. If so, bye-bye EOS 10D!

Congratulations John! Wow! I can't wait to see your photos - and your review.

I'm waiting on B&H.....if they don't take too long.......

I'll enjoy yours in the meantime.

    Canon EOS Rebel XTi Samples

I shot some backyard roses and some backyard mini-moto racing today. Right now, I must say, the jury is still out. I didn't get the success I'd hoped for with the auto focus. But I'll need to shoot a subject I'm more familiar with to really test the AF. I shot with the kit lens and my 70-200 f/2.8L. I'm not sure but I'm a little concerned there may be a back-focusing issue. I'll have to do some controlled testing to find out for sure. At the minimum, I would expect the Digital Rebel XTi to match the AF performance of my 10D. But I can't be sure until I shoot a subject I absolutely know. The mini-motos were something brand new to me and they are pretty quick and hard to keep the AF point on.

I really like the small size and very light weight. It takes up a lot less room in my mountain biking hydration pack and the weight is very minimal. That's a very positive change for my mountain bike photos. The LCD is very nice, too. I do wish it had the thumb aperture control wheel. But I'm willing to give it up for this tiny camera, I think.

    Full-Res Rebel XTi / 400D Roses

Here are a couple of rose photos I took today with the EOS Digital Rebel XTi. Neither of these has been adjusted except for sharpening when I resized them. You can see the untouched, full-res originals here:

    Re: Full-Res Rebel XTi / 400D Roses

    John,

Glad you got out to take some pictures. The roses look good on my screen. The other images look a bit soft, but I have an LCD monitor so don't go by me in either case.

I really want to get this camera, so I'm hoping you find the back-focusing isn't there - and the AF is better than you first thought.

I hesitate to buy from Best Buy without the warranty as they don't always take things back if "they" don't consider the item defective. Back-focusing and soft may not be a reason they would understand. I called B&H and they have no idea when this camera will be in - they said Canon told them they weren't shipping until later in the month.

At any rate, please let us know when you do more tests.

Thanks.........here's hoping it all works out..

    Liz

    More Digital Rebel Xti Samples

Here are some more samples from the new camera.

    Some more details I've noted.

    1) Depth-of-field preview
    2) Mirror lock-up
    3) I can program a custom function to lock the AI Servo auto focus, just like on my other cameras!

    Re: Full Res in Gallery

    John,

What about the question you had about possible back-focus and AF? Any other concerns?

These images look great on my screen - especially the stones/rocks.

    Thanks

To me these pictures arent nearly as good as the XT and I know you always take Phenomenal pictures. The new sensor may be underperforming. The XT just had this look and color that made me want the XT's sensor in my D50

Anyways, thanks for the quick little review and samples. I'll probably be buying a XT soon when I get some money for my birthday or maybe selling my D50 and getting a D80 since it looks like a sexy setup, hopefully ritz will have them in stock and overcharge me for it

I really like the picture of the pebbles, John. That is very cool.

In reviewing just these few photos, there doesn't seem to be much difference in picture quality between the XTi and my 300D. That's not a problem for me, but it's interesting to see how similar these images are to ones that my camera produces.

I'm excited that you've got this camera and that you'll be performing some test with it, as I am seriously considering purchasing it as my main camera.

    Ray,

I'm getting this camera - a few days ago I found these images shot with the XTi by someone who got one of the first ones. I'm also looking forward to seeing more from John (and me hopefully).

Holy pixels, Batman! I guess I have to take back what I said. Of course, the lens he's using is pretty awesome too. Probably cost him 3x what he paid for the camera.

Nice link, Liz. Thanks for posting it. My mind is made up.

Now, where'd I put that credit card?

    Ray,
The only places I know that have them in stock are Norman Camera and some Best Buy and Circuit City stores

I got mine at Norman Camera. They didn't get a whole lot in, and don't have any black body only cameras. I checked their website and they still have silver body and both (silver & black) kits. They're expecting another shipment very soon. They are very reputable and easy to deal with. I ordered by phone and they are very friendly. I've purchased other equipment from them before.

Here's the link if you're interested.

I just sold a lens and my XT - and this will cover the XTi - otherwise I couldn't afford it.

Yes, I got mine yesterday - and just got a few minutes tonight to open the box. It's beautiful! I love that 2.5 LCD screen. Tomorrow I'm going out for a few hours to try it out.
