    Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens

    hi,
im a new student to photography and im about to purchase my first dSLR + lens. I've already decided which camera i will buy, the canon digital rebel xt. But I'm having a lot of trouble with choosing the right lens. Right now i am very interested in purchasing the canon ef-s 17-85mm IS lens but i found two different pictures of the lens on the net.

One lens has some words in a goldish color, whereas the other lens has those same words in white..

Anyone with info, please help me out. Thanks in advance!

Those are both the same lens. The top one has been compressed down so that it's flatter - probably to fit a particular space on a Web site. The bottom one has the correct proportions but appears to have been converted to b&w. So don't worry about it. And I think it's a great choice for a first and only lens. It's very versatile and will serve you well. I have the previous, 35mm version - the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. I've been using it for years. I've had it in the rain for hours more than once, banged it all over the place on mountain bike rides and it's still rocking. And since the 17-85 IS is newer, I expect it will be even better.

    Thanks Photo-John.

Does anyone know why the coloring of the words on the lens differ between the two pictures.. (macro near the middle of the lens, the logo/word on the back of the lens)
In the first picture, both words appear goldish. In the second, they appear in white.

Read my post again. The second image has been converted to a black and white photo. So there's no color in it anymore. There is only one version of this lens.

I had a thought, though. If you're concerned because you're shopping by price and you've found a good deal. Be careful. Most of us counsel against shopping by price. There are too many unscrupulous online electronics dealers and it's not worth the risk. It's much better to shop by dealer reputation. At the minimum, check the dealers against the Dealer Feedback forum here and on ResellerRatings.com. Too many people have gotten ripped off.

If you're in San Francisco, go down to Adolph Gasser's and take a look at the lens. They're a huge pro dealer and they have everything. If you want to order online, try B&H or Adorama. Those are two of the biggest and best dealers in the world. They're trustworthy and their prices are very good. If you see prices lower than they list, be suspicious.

    Re: Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens

i was just about to purchase the set but i saw a new en-larged picture of it. i see a little green in the picture where you said was in b/w. and the ultrasonic label is in a goldish color. the pictures clearly show the differences in label color even though they are the same lense.. does that mean one is an older model? a refurbished lense? etc?

note for the first pic.- i found this set on adorama going for 1099.99 (it doesnt say anything about the lense or body being refurbished. Also, the set is going for a price lower than anywhere else i've searched..)

This kit is going for the same price at B&H. If this is lower than what you have seen in the past, it could be due to the anoncement of the new Rebel XTi that will be out next month. The price on the XT dropped when they made the anouncement. Like PJ said, there is only once version of this lens so go ahead and order it without worring about the differnent photos.
