I can't believe it's been more than a year since I have posted anything here...
WOW...
I guess I haven't had a lot to say about photography be it my own or someone else's, but I do today...
Thanks to Facebook and some good luck in making some new friends,my photography has been "featured" in a couple of blogs lately.
The first one one was back in November, on a fly fishing blog about fiberglass rods, called
The Fiberglass Manifesto(TFM).
It was a question and answer kind of interview, called, "Brian Schiele is The Holga Master"
The second was back in February when I traded some photographs for some fly fishing stuff, with Cameron who is responsible for TFM, that he called, "The Holga Master Delivers".
I had an opportunity to do go into the darkroom and make the prints I traded by the way, with thanks, to friend and local photographer Robert Hall.
Lastly and most recently, I interviewed again for a new fly fishing zine called " Sleeping In The Dirt".
Aaron Otto, is someone I've actually met in person last summer, and is quite the angler and photographer who fishes everywhere and meets a lot of cool people too, so he decided to do a webzine of the same name. He's only got two issues out, but in the latest issue I was interviewed again.. Sleeping In The Dirt Numero Dos
Check out pages, 14-17
So far I have been doing the fly fishing project for about two years now, and I have 40 photographs so far. I'd like to see how far I can take it and make it into an exhibit and hopefully a book too.
You can see all 40 photographs on Flickr, in the set I am currently calling " On The Fly"

2009 has been quite a slow year for me on lots of levels, which is a big part of why I haven't had a blog entry in nearly eight months.
It also means that I haven't been too productive with my photography, but I have been making photographs.
I have had a number of photographs shown in three different exhibits this year, which is always a good thing.
The first appearance of one of my photographs was at a local bike shop, where they were doing a bike theme exhibit. I had an old favorite exhibited, one of my first diptychs, the photograph I call "Bike Rack".
At another exhibit, one at a gallery in California, City of Brea Art Gallery, had an art exhibit entitled "Home From the Front", it was specifically for veterans I was very honored to have been a part of this exhibit.to show my art along other veterans.

Both pictures courtesy of The City of Brea Art Gallery.
The third showing is still being exhibited.
There is a local sports, outdoors arts magazine, The Wasatch Journal that held a black and white photography contest a bit ago, and my photograph was one 20 selected out of some 450 total entries to be exhibited. I think I placed high enough too, that my photograph will be published in the magazine later this year.
I am really pleased with this, because this is the first fly fishing photograph that has been published. I hope it won't be the last time either.

I really do belong BEHIND the camera....
It's a great feeling to have your photography exhibited, be it in your own exhibit or a group project or even a juried competition. It adds value to your art in many ways.
So I urge you to enter the next juried photography competition that happens in your area or that you hear about. There are often some very specialized competitions out there all you have to do is look.

My photography group has done another outstanding collection of our great photography this year. My photo group, the Salt Lake Seven, which this year is actually eight, rather than the six of us that were in last years book and exhibit have decided to do this annually now.
You can check out this years book HERE.
I am very excited about this book, I have submitted a collection of my inflatable characters, which I am happy to see be put out there again.
So if you need any last minute gift ideas for that photography lover, check out out book!

Last night was the opening reception of the "Cringe:Purge" at Sam Wellers Bookstore, and while I don't know what to expect, it's great to put up some of my oldest work to see where I have come from over the past 20 years.
The funny thing about this exhibit, is that next week is my 20 year high school reunion.
The information card on my two photographs, me circa 1988:

I know that the guitar photograph is different from the one I posted in my last blog entry, but when I did that post I had already sent the photograph to the bookstore.
Me, circa 2008, with my photographs from 1988:
Note: I would NEVER use a blue matte now, NEVER!
One of the many banners, hanging in the bookstore, someone we should all know and someone that a lot of us wish we could thank for getting us involved in photography. Thanks AA!
Watch Sam Wellers blog for other pics of the opening reception.
Thanks Stephanie for all of the hard work you did to put this on!

20 years ago, I graduated from high school, and by shear coincidence a local book
store, is holding a small exhibit of they are calling, "CRINGE:PURGE", featuring the best of our high school art careers. So as you can imagine, I have submitted two photographs from my senior year.
I think it will be fun being a part of this, even though I have looked at the two photographs numerous times over the past 20 years, this will be the first time they have been shown publically since I first did them.
As part of the exhibit, the book store asked for a pic of me, and the others who are showing their old stuff, so I sent my senior class pic. Can you spot me?

There are many uses for a blog, they can be used as a journal to record your daily thoughts, or you can rant about what you care to rant about, or of course you can plug something you want others to know about. Which is why I am writing today...
As in previous entries, I am plugging my recent submissions in JPG Magazine's current themes, "Democracy", "On Stage" and "Geometry"
In case they don't come up, here's my profile on JPG
Democracy:
On Stage:
Geometry:
PLEASE VOTE FOR ME!
Thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who voted for me during the past weeks, although I didn't get enough votes to win the "People's Choice Award" I did garner enough to put me in the top 20 portfolios, out of some 2951 portfolios.
As part of this distinction, the work I submitted and two others that I sent afterwards will be exhibited at an exhibit party on 28 June at club/gallery in Brooklyn, NY called Dubai:Brooklyn.
Unfortunately, I cannot make it, and I don't like that!
If you've ever displayed your work, you know that a big part of is interacting with people and talking about your art. It's rather euphoric I might say!
The thing that excites me most about this particular exhibit is the way they are going to display the photographs. Instead of the traditional way of framing and matting and all that stuff, the gallery is going to project the photographs onto the wall. I don't know however, if each photographer will have his or her own projection or if each photographer will be shown one after the other on the same screen or what.
Regardless, I WANT TO BE THERE!
Anyone available to take some pics of the party/exhibit?
There was also a mention of me and four others who are members of JPG.com, check out "Five JPG members are Artists Wanted"

I can't believe it's been more than five months since I posted here!
Even though I've been a little quiet I have been doing some photography, the usual stuff but I have started photographing a new subject, fly fishing, which I have been doing with my Holga.
I have also submitted four photographs from my "Inflatable Characters" project, which is the main reason I am writing this post...
The juried exhibition, "EXPOSURE: A Photography Competition, has two prizes I am interested in, one of which you can help me with.
The main prize, which is selected by a panel of jurors, includes a monetary prize of $2008, a massive scale photo show on buildings in the top New York City Art Districts: Chelsea, Dumbo and Williamsburg. An Opening Event will be hosted at the Leo Kesting Gallery in Manhattan, plus a full-press promotional campaign and a feature in their upcoming publication, The Annual.
The prize you can help me with is the, "People's Choice Award".
You can vote HERE, which is the gallery I have set up along with a small bio and a pic of yours truly...
To vote, simply click on the appropriate number of stars(Five being the best rating).
It's that easy.
Thanks in advance for voting!
Vote soon! The entry deadline is 17 June and the notification date is 15 July
