I thought I'd be one of the first to post winter scenes when I shot these 2 weeks ago with a small Nikon Coolpix 4100 that I borrowed but I couldn't have the files in hand as soon as I planned.

So, here my winter series, my first new shooting in a long long time. Comments are welcome.

All nice shots. 3rd one would probably be my favourite out of the bunch. The perspective is nice and I also like how the tree shadows come across. Althought I would've liked it even more without the 2 people.

Seb, all are pretty images, with my favs being the 3 and 4th. I'm a bit surprised though, you say these are the first you have shot in a long , long, time? I did not realize you were posting mostly your archive works. I thought you had been out there shooting away. Glad to know you are at it. Keep it up.

excellent shooting - we had snow yesterday morning gone by early afternoon - not fair!

From the top - no critique I think this is terrific.

Next I love the composition of this photo and the texture of that bark

Next This is my favourite

Last this would be my faviourite if you'd managed to get rid of the twigs in front of the barn so that it would be framed by the tree and the bush. I love the colours and the shadows here. - Chains saw in the camera bag next :-)

All nice shots. And I especially like the last. It could just be my monitor setting, but I was wondering how it would look a little lighter. Also, there seems to be a subtile blue cast in all the shots and was thinking "white-balance" for sun and shade.

Snow is tricky (for me).

I like all the photos...but my favorite is # 3. I like how you composed the shot and the time of day for this photo is perfect. The people in the picture add interest and the photo would be rather boring without them.

I have to agree with readingr that the last photo has some serious potential if it weren't for the random twigs. The composition is great and I like how the tree frames the subject.
The lighting is great and I love the shadows on the snow.

Hey all, thanks for commenting.

Leels: I thought that #3 needs people in it to fill the scene but perhaps there are too many folks (there are few more persons in front of the two main "characters"). I guess that it could have worked better if there was simply one or two persons. But hey, its nice to hear various opinions. In fact I think that the picture would simply be different with no people at all.

Gary: Well I may push it a little by saying a long lonnnggg time. Actually, I haven't really shot anything serious since mid november. I don't like the idea to submit my gears to our ever ending cold weather and I reached a point were I missed direction/inspiration at the end of last year. Taking a break was the perfect opportunity to review my stuff from last year, work my Photoshop skills a little and so on... I am running out of "archives" though!! :D

Readingr: I hear you, superglue for pigeons and a chainsaw when it gets serious!! I fully agree that the bushes are an issue. I really wish they weren't there but I was compelled to shoot the scene.

Tim: Thank you for the suggestions. You are right about the color cast. I totally missed it at first but it jumps at me now that you mentioned it. My monitor is rather bright so the pictures may appears a bit dark for others. I'll calibrate it soon.

PlantedTao: Thanks for the kind words. I am glad to have encountered this lighting conditions.


Bottom line, the Coolpix 4100 was a fun little camera to use. Oddly, the ratio of the picture vary depending on the shooting mode selected (notice #3 vs the others). Also, it kickly get noisier than the average DLSR plus it is lacking manual controls. Nevertheless, it does the job with decent lighting.
