I realize the big glare across the log is distracting, im not sure how to get rid of it.

I think a little burning in PS would take care of the glare you are talking about. I don't find it distracting at all tho. I do find the blown out part of the sky a bit distracting tho, but over all I like the image.

I agree with Michael that the glare can be taken away by PS, however, the sky highlights cannot be improved upon. I would advise you to investigate the use of split ND filters such as Cokin P series. They go for about 30$ a piece (add another $20 for the holder). They can do a reasonable job as long as you are not a purist in terms of the color accuracy.... and in this shot, color really does not matter!

THis was a godd photo opportunity as the sky is really interesting/threatening. Maybe next time you can use a bit of fill flash to bring out the details in the foreground.

PS: I am glad to see you back! I was wondering whether you were still pursuing photography. I am looking towards seeing more of your work. BTW, are you taking a class?

Steph, I could not find anything about the Cokin P Series on the internet, maybe I am looking in the wrong places. And of course, it doesn't matter as far as color accuracy, I do B&W Photography. It was a very bright day, I never even thought of using the flash, I'm going to go back to that spot and shoot again and see what I can improve.

P.S.- I'm glad to see someone rememebered me! ;) I've been pretty busy lately, I usually don't even have any free time except for weekends, if I'm lucky. But i'll try to stop by more. Yes, I am taking a class in High School. Luckily we have a small dark room to work with.

It's a French company but I think they had their website translated in English. Most Canadian photo shops carry their filters.

If you look for more high-end filters, have a look at the Singh-Ray web site www.singhray.com. Even if you don't think of getting any, they do have quite a bit of info on how to use filters. I found their website quite informative in this respect. The Cokin website is more oriented towards tacky effects, but some of their filters do have some use.

As for the fill flash, this is something you might want to keep in mind each time you are shooting straight towards a source of light or when the light is very strong (i.e. strong shadows).

This has a feeling to it, but I find myself thinking it is a background waiting for a subject. Just my $.02 -- take my free advice for what it is worth.

I agree totally LavaLamp, my intent was for the tree to be the subject, but its not in focus. :( When I go back, i'm going to try and redo it so the tree is in focus and the sky isnt as much of a distraction.
