Please let me know what everyone thinks of this photo taken of my Niece.
It was taken at her third birthday party last November. I blurred the background and made it b&w, softened the edges of my niece, cropped and sharpened the image.
Any way I've said in the past I wasn't a big advocate of using Photoshop, but I can see the merits now ;)

She's a very beautiful girl, and this is a great photo. I think the PS work you did probably helped immensely. The only thing I would have changed on this one is the camera angle. Often times, you can get great looks by getting down at the childs level when taking a portrait.....it gives them that adult feel as this photo has. But for this photo I don't think it's working well. I'd have tried a few photos at different elevations.

Thanks for the reply Trevor.
This shot was the only decent of about 10 I took of her. My niece is a real busy body. You can't tell that from the photo, but she was moving all around as I was trying to get one shot of her.
But I do understand your comment of trying different levels. Perhaps it would have made for a better image, but as her Dad would say: "Any port in the storm".

I think the ps work you did on the background is very good because it's not obvious, blends right in. I'm not a portrait shooter (not yet, anyway) so I just don't know what to critique about your shot. I think it is quite nice, which isn't a very helpful critique, is it? :)

Was available light an option? This seems to be a flash exposure to me, which usually leaves the features poorly modeled. I figured you already knew this when you chose the flash so didn't need to mention it.

Here is a background of the conditions and the equipment used.
Canon A70 (used the built in flash, in auto mode)
The photo was taken indoors in a hotel lobby. The lighting wasn't perfect.
My niece was very active, I couldn't keep her still to snap any more than one shot. Basically I would get her to be still, snap a shot. She would try to run away. I would try to get her to stand still again, etc.
The conditions were not in my favor.
